Funny thing about this picture is that if you zoom in you can clearly read the sign “Liberati Silvia Melis” in the top left corner.
Silvia Melis had been kidnapped by the famous criminal organization L'Anonima Sarda earlier that year in an abduction that lasted 265 days. She was going out with our neighbor at the time.
Extreme poverty, carelessness and corruption lead to crime. 
Because when treated as beasts, people start behaving as beasts.
Fortunately, the vast majority of Sardinians never indulged in such activities and I respect them for that.
